Understanding Mechanical Lock Types

Tubular & Interconnected Locks Also called pin and tumbler locks, tubular locks contain 6-8 pins in a circular pattern.  Installation of a tubular lock is less invasive to the door.  However, they are considered the least secure lock type, and are typically used on interior doors.  Interconnected door locks have an internal mechanism that deactivates the deadbolt lock when the knob or lever is turned to open the door. This type of lock is required by some municipalities for certain applications like group or retirement homes.
Cylindrical Locks Sometimes called bored locks, cylindrical locks are sturdier than tubular locks.  They are easier to install and simple to replace and rekey.  Cylindrical locks are considered more secure than tubular locks, and the majority of the locks in the US today are cylindrical locks.
Mortise Locks Mortise locks are considered even more secure than cylindrical locks.  They require a pocket to be cut into the door and consist of a lever mechanism.  They are stronger and more versitile than cylindrical locks in both external trim and function.  Mortise locks are heavy enough to support ornate and solid cast knobs and levers.  They also accept a wide variety of cylinders and accessories, allowing for architectural conformity with locks and door hardware already on site.
Deadbolts Also called a deadlock, deadbolts are considered more secure than all of the spring-latch locks.  Deadbolts are available with a single cylinder or a double cylinder.  The single cylinder deadbolt operates by a key on the outside and a thumbturn on the inside.  A double cylinder deadbolt requires a key for unlocking on both sides of the door.
Portable Security Portable security includes locks such as padlocks, cables, cylinders and cabinet locks.
